D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign's HBCU of the Day: University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

Starting today, D.J's Music Site is welcoming back it's HBCU Campaign. in June, we will select an HBCU to honor and tweet/facebook about every day as we start back and kick off our HBCU Campaign. Then in July, we will bring back our HBCU's of the Month honoree program. Each day we honor an HBCU, the University/College will be added to our new HBCU dictionary which can be found here.

Today HBCU of the day is: University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

This month the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was named Tom Joyner Foundation School of the Month. In September 2012, the University was named D.J's Music Site September's HBCU of the Month. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff History

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is a historically black university located in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The University UAPB_Lion.gifwas founded in 1873 as the oldest HBCU and the second oldest public institution in the state of Arkansas. UAPB is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

In 1873, the university was founded as a land - grant college under the 1890 amendments to Morrill Land - Grant Colleges Act, which required states which did not open their land- grant university to all races to establish a separate land - grant university for each race. The school served it's ties with the University of Arkansas and became Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal (AM&N) College in 1927; then it moved to it's current campus location in 1929. The school rejoin what is now the University of Arkansas system in 1972.

Since 1988, the University has gained recognition as a leading institution in aquaculture studies, offering the state's only comprehensive program in this field, and supporting a growing regional industry throughout the Mid-South.

As home of the black and gold, Golden Lions. UAPB's sports teams have participated in NCAA Division 1 in the SWAC (Southwestern Athlete Conference) since rejoining the conference 1988. In the 2009-2012 school year, for the first time in school history, the woman's soccer team won the SWAC tournament and made it to the NCAA tournament. Also, the men's basketball team received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as champions of the SWAC conference. The Golden Lion football team won the SWAC Championship on December 8, 2012 against Jackson State in Birmingham, Alabama. UAPB finished the 2012 season 10-2 and are the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference champions.

UAPB lost their Chancellor for over 20 years in May. Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis decided to retired after an audit came through and fired 4 employees from the University. There were no criminal charged filed. Dr. Calvin Johnson was selected as Interim Chancellor until a new Chancellor is placed in 12 month. The 12 month Chancellor search took placed and the U of A system nominated Dr. Lawrence Alexander as the new Chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

UAPB is also well known for their outstanding band program. The band was selected to participate in the United States Inaugural Parade of our first black President, Barack Obama.  Their band is known as the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South (M4) and is under the leadership of Mr. John R. Graham.
