Tuskegee was founded on July 4, 1881 as the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers. It was part of the expansion of higher education for blacks in the former Confederate states following the American Civil Ware, with many other schools founded by the northern American Missionary Association.

Booker T. Washington, who was hired as principal of Tuskegee began classes for his new school in a run-down church and shanty. The following year in 1882, Washington purchased a former plantation of 100 acres in size. Based on his experience at Hampton Institute, Washington intended to train students in skills, morals, religious life, in addition to academic subjects.

The campus has been designated as the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site. The Tuskegee University campus is the only school in the United States to hold this distinction. Tuskegee University currently offers 40 bachelor's degree programs, 17 masters degree programs, a 5-year accredited professional degree program in architecture, and 4 doctoral degree programs.

Tuskegee University campus also includes the grave site of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. The George Washington Carver Museum and the Booker T. Washington monument, which is located in the center of the campus.

Summer 2014, Tuskegee University was named the D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign's April 2015 HBCU of the Month school. During the HBCU Campaign 'HBCU of the Month' initiative celebration, the institution is celebrated through its history, President, Faculty & Staff, Students and Alumni through our social media sites as well as we campaign for contributions to give back to the institution and scholarships for the students.
