No New Posts   Stillman College to reduce its tuition in Fall 2015

April 16, 2015

Stillman College is an historically black liberal arts college located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which was founded in 1876.

"One of the main things I am a proponent of is communities," Dr. Petter E. Millet said. "When a student receives a college degree it influences more than just that individual. It is also going to have a positive effect on that family and the community."

Dr. Millet, who was named the sixth president of the college on June 26, 2014 argued that a college degree will continue to be a core factor in a student's ability to earn a living.

"If you look at projections in the business world in the coming years, majority of jobs are going to require education beyond a high school diploma," he said.

No New Posts   The D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign Welcomes Simmons College of Kentucky Designated as 107th HBCU

April 16, 2015

simmonscollege.jpgLOUISVILLE, KY - This past Monday Simmons College of Kentucky was designated as 107th Historical Black College and University. Simmons College now joins Kentucky State University as the second HBCU in Kentucky.

Simmons was established in 1879 by members of black baptist churches in Kentucky who organized a state convention of Colored Baptist Churches. In November of 1879, trustees of the Convention of Colored Baptist Church purchased 4 acres of land on the corner of 7th & Kentucky Street in Louisville that immediately served as the campus for the school.

In 2005, Dr. Kevin W. Cosby who is the senior pastor at St. Stephen Church became the 13th president and subsequently changed the name of the school to Simmons College of Kentucky whose once name(s) were: Simmons University, State University, Louisville Municipal College, and Simmons Bible College.

The name change to Simmons College of Kentucky was to reflect the school's mission to prepare Christians for ministry, while reinstating its initial mission of general education. In 1930, The Great Depression came across the campus and forced the institution to sell it property due to foreclosure on the mortgage. But in 2006, the institution was fortunate to buy its original campus and move back.

In March 2015, the institution received its accreditation and just this past Monday the institution received its recognition as an HBCU.

The D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign Fund president and founder, Mr. Demetrius Johnson, Jr. released a statement on behalf of the organization welcoming the institution to our list of serving HBCUs.

"As President and Founder of the D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign, its my pleasure to welcome an historic piece of ours to the joined list of HBCUs of who the HBCU Campaign serves and serve our mission to support the excellence and campaign to provide assistance to HBCUs as well as recruit and format initiative projects to bring awareness involvement for HBCU students and alumni's of their perspective HBCUs." said Founder Demetrius Johnson, Jr., "We at HBCU Campaign would like to welcome Simmons College of Kentucky to the list as the 107th Historically Black College and University. Simmons is now the second HBCU in Kentucky along with Kentucky State University. Please stand to welcome Simmons College of Kentucky to the HBCU Family! No New Posts   White Professor Sues Alabama State University for Discrimination Against Whites

April 7, 2015

asu.jpgMONTGOMERY, Ala - Two white faculty members at Alabama State University has filed a lawsuit against the school in which they claim that ASU discriminates against whites in its hiring and admissions processes, USA Today reports.

Steven B. Chesbro, reportedly the only white dean at Alabama State, and John Garland, a faculty member, also took the issues with how the school allegedly implemented regulations against same-sex couples, according to USA Today.

According to source, Chesbro and Garland claim that the school retaliated against them for speaking up about the university's alleged use of race to decide which students are admitted to the school and which faculty members are hired.

Chesbro and Garland attorney Wayne Sabel, described some of the statements that were allegedly made to his clients about which faculty members should be brought on board to teach African-American students. "You look at some of the statements they have made that are in the complaint, and they are saying things like, 'Only black professors should teach black students," Sabel said.

Sabel even stated that his clients were physically threatened when they voiced their concerns about these issues. "They have told Dr. Chesbro that his hands are tied in the face of gross insubordination, and even threats of physical harm," said Sabel said.

Sabel also claimed that Chesbro and Garland are being forced out of their positions for taking a stand against the alleged discrimination: "There is clearly a campaign not only to force Dr. Chesbro and Dr. Garland out, but to force out a number of other longtime white faculty."

According to source, ASU's administration has denied the allegations and says that discussions about Chesbro's and Garland's employment had nothing to do with race or sexual orientation. "They deny that anything related to [Chesbro's and Garland's] employment arose because of anything racial or anything related to their sexual orientation," said Bobby Segall, attorney representing ASU.

There are at least six Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charges among Chesbro's and Garland's claims pending against the university; preference was given to black female professors during a hunt for a new faculty member and preference was also given to African-American doctoral candidates in the school's physical therapy program; and black students were admitted to the physical therapy program at a higher rate than white students, even though there were more white students who satisfied the GPA requirements for admission. They also claim that rules preventing couples from working together in the same department applied only to same-sex couples.

With this being said and being an historically black university with no rights to discriminate, how do you feel about these actions by Alabama State University?

No New Posts   Update: University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Chancellor Releases Statement on Arkansas Legistators House Bill

March 20, 2015

UAPB20campus-web_zpsb6f279c8.jpg

PINE BLUFF, AR - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander released a statement via social media on the House Bill 1838 that brought concerns to students, alumni, supporters and the HBCU community.

Last night Chancellor Alexander released this statement:

"The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is proud of all its academic programs and the contributions the institution has made in teaching, research, service and outreach.

We were understandably concerned when we learned earlier this week that a bill was filed in the Arkansas legislature concerning our Aquaculture program, a signature program created and supported by our institution from its inception. We are working with the UA System, our legislative delegation and other legislators to address the bill so that the Aquaculture program remains a vital part of the research and extension activities of our campus. We want to reassure our students, faculty and staff, agricultural stakeholders, alumni and all others who support UAPB of our unwavering commitment to our land-grant mission, and of the institution's role as an economic partner in Pine Bluff, our region and our state."

Voting of the House Bill was on the table to take place in a hearing this morning but according to UAPB's National Alumni Association President Tammie Hall, the House decided to withdrawn the bill. Hall also released a statement to the public.

"I have great news this morning for all of our UAPB/AM&N family and friends. This morning in the Agriculture Committee Hearing HB1838 was withdrawn. I take this opportunity to thank Chancellor Alexander, Representative Flowers and other Legislators supporting UAPB.

We continue from this point telling the great story of UAPB!!!"

Students at the university was not informed about the bill until the day before voting. If the House Bill 1838, introduced by first-term democrat Camille Bennett was to be voted on to pass, it would've removed UAPB's School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences and transfer all assets, equipment, grants and other funds to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. This would've expanse the UA Lonoke Extension Center.

Since 1988, the university has gained recognition as a leading research institution in aquaculture studies, offering the state's only comprehensive program in this field and according to the school, it's aquaculture program is a $167 million industry in Arkansas along and worth approximately $1.2 billion in the Mississippi Delta region. The program is enhanced by the addition of an Aquaculture/Fisheries PhD program, which received full accreditation in November 2011.

The D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign would like to take the time to express our appreciation to all of the students, alumni, supporters in taking the time to help take into action this serious matter in saving a historical piece of a prestigious HBCU institution.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff once Arkansas Agricultural Mechanical and Normal College has been built on agriculture since its inception in 1873. Since 1921, the "A" in AM&N has stood in the name and the recognition of the institution since the beginning of its operations.

UAPB is the only HBCU in Arkansas with a PhD program (Aquaculture and Fisheries) and the agriculture department is internationally know.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are State owned and supported have been hit hard last year and this present year including Elizabeth City State University and South Carolina State University.

Students, Alumni, Supporters and the HBCU community are taking to instagram to protest the vote of the bill. The Arkansas House plans to vote on the bill tomorrow. The University was not informed  nor have UAPB officials released a statement.

No New Posts   UAPB Opens Business to their Student Food Pantry on Campus

March 17, 2015

A survey was conducted of 137 students indicated that 78 percent of them had gone without adequate food at least once, and 50 percent had gone without  adequate food five times or more during the semester.

After obtaining those numbers, Conley, who is the faculty coordinator for the food pantry, said another survey indicated that many students said even though there was a need, they would feel embarrassed. Fifty said they would use the pantry and wanted to be able to shop, so the pantry was set up that way, with students being able to use it once a month.

After obtaining those numbers, Conley said another survey indicated that many students said even though there was a need, they would feel embarrassed. Fifty however, said they would use the pantry and wanted to be able to shop, so the pantry was set up that way, with students being able to use it once a month.

"We've started small, but we've had people who want to give food demonstrations or teach people how to cook, and some people have suggested we need a clothes closet," Conley said.

The pantry is open to all residential and commuter students with a valid ID Card, and Conley said some staff members at UAPB have also expressed interest in using the pantry.

The Arkansas Food Bank who is also involved, and Erin Chambers, the coordinator of the food bank for the state, said "20,000 people in Jefferson County are not sure where their next meal is going to come from" and said the food bank will continue to offer technical support to UAPB.

The food pantry will be open from 2-4pm, every third Thursday of each month, but depending on demand and the availability of volunteers to operate the pantry, the hours could be extended to twice a month.
