Congratulations to Chicago's Jackie Robinson West Little League baseball team from the HBCU Campaign team as they're advancing to the Little League World Series after an 12-7 victory against New Albany, Indiana, in the Great Lakes Region championship game this past weekend in Indiana. The Little League team became the first all-black team from Chicago to reach the Little League World Series in three decades. The last Chicago team to qualify for the World Series was West in 1983. That team finished fifth overall. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn to declare Saturday as "Jackie Robinson West Little League Championship Day" in the state after the victory. The boy will play this Thursday (opening round) @ 3pm at the championship in Williamsport, Pa. This is something MAJOR great for the black community, especially Chicago. Tells you there are kids who believe in themselves, doing positive things and not killing one another. The HBCU Campaign wishes the kids, coaches and parents safe travels to PA and the BEST of luck in the opening round of the championship! |

The Division II league announced the move at its media day on Monday (yesterday). The game is schedule to be played at the Cramton Bowl for the next three seasons starting in 2014. SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore says the stadium "is a spectacular venue as it has held some legendary games in college football." "The SIAC football championship game has grown significantly over the years and Montgomery is great fit for our postseason atmosphere. The Cramton Bowlis a spectacular venue as it has held some legendary games in college football," SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore said. "We want to thank the City of Montgomery, Mayor Todd Strange, The Central Alabama Sports Commission and The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitor Bureau for embracing and assisting our transition to such a historic venue." The SIAC's President's Council unanimously approved the move from Atlanta, where the first three championship games were played. The move was also an up for the venue, which lost its most noteworthy tenant, when Alabama state constructed its $62-million stadium two years ago to play its home games. "We are proud to welcome the SIAC Football Championship Game to the city named by USA as the Best Historic City in the U.S., Montgomery, Alabama," Mayor Todd Stranger said. "The Central Alabama Sports Commission and The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitor Bureau are working hard to ensure that the next three championship games at the world class Cramton Bowl and Multiplex are the best and most memorable in SIAC history." The league estimates the championship game will attract 15,000 fans to the 25,000-seat Cramton Bowl and about $1.2 million in revenue. |

The D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign is an organization that honors not just the rich history of HBCUs but the current standings of these institutions, the Chancellors and Presidents (current and past), the faculty, staff, students, alumni and the success of these institutions named Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The HBCU Campaign honors 12 HBCUs each year as our apart of our HBCU of the Month initiative in spirits to raise money to give back to those supported HBCUs as well as scholarships to give to current and future HBCUs students. All HBCUs are struggling through a budget crisis, some a lot more than others. So, it's the supporters job to try and help keep these institutions of higher eduction alive and open to keep serving the history and a purpose in the near future. Why keep HBCU institutions alive? Because they are historic landmark and part of the black and brown color timeline. HBCUs were created back in the day because of segregation, black and browns were not able to educate with whites so civil right leaders and activists such as Mary Bethune created school for Negros to go attend to earn an education. Even though we have a set of HBCUs that we celebrate each month in the year of 2014, we also have our Top 10 favorite HBCUs who we think has set the bar this year and really impress us in the following areas: school pride, alumni giving, campus beautification, degree programs and success within their institution. |
1. | University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Pine Bluff, Arkansas | ![]() | We can not pick 10 HBCUs we like without picking our Founder HBCU. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is housed in the historical area of Pine Bluff not too far from downtown Pine Bluff. UAPB is it's nickname for short has achieved many, many accomplishments in the past couple years such as the Golden Lions Football won the SWAC tournament in 2012, the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South march in President Obama's inaugural parade in 2009 and performed in the Honda Battle of the Bands in January 2014. Their Vesper Choir is internationally known. And the University just inaugurated their sixth Chancellor, Dr. Laurence B. Alexander this past April who is taking the campus to the next level and UAPB is best know for their outstanding agriculture and fishes program. UAPB is also known for their historic landmark, the W.E. O' Bryant Bell Tower which is located in the middle of their campus. UAPB ranks 8th in the top 10 HBCUs in alumni giving.UAPB was named our 'HBCU of the Month' of February 2014. For more information about UAPB, visit their website at www.uapb.edu. |
2. | Southern University and A&M College Baton Rouge, Louisiana | ![]() | Southern University is our one of second favorite HBCUs thus far. The HBCU Campaign honored Southern University and A&M College which is located on the Bluff in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the school spirit their is outstanding! SUBR is home of the Human Jukebox who was named HBCU Marching Band of the Year at this years HBCU Awards along with Male Coach of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year. 3. | Grambling State University Grambling, Louisiana | ![]() | It's nothing and the HBCU Campaign means nothing like the Gram Fam! We love the Grambling Tigers and they campus is historically beautiful. We plan to honor Grambling as one of our 'HBCUs of the Month' in the near future. Our Founder has visited Grambling campus twice to the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center to see UAPB play Grambling in basketball every year. We also love the Grambling Tiger who is located at the entrance of Grambling's campus and let's not forget the World Famed Tiger band who has participated in many United States president inaugural parades. Even though Grambling made national news this past year for boycotting practices and not attending Jackson State University homecoming game, the Gram Fam has an outstanding student body. They just recently lost their president Frank Pogue due to retirment and is currently in the search of a new president. For more information about Grambling, visit their website at www.gram.edu. |
4. | Wiley College Marshall, Texas | ![]() | Wiley College is another HBCU who must honor as one of our 'HBCUs of the Month' in the near future. Their student body who we call the Wiley College Nation, school pride is remarkable and they show us all the time they love their Wiley. Wiley has been known for many historical moments, such as being home of the famously 'The Great Debaters,' and being notable as one of the oldest predominantly black colleges west of the Mississippi River. And this past May, Wiley's 'A Cappella Choir performed at the opening convocation for the International Association of Methodist-related Schools, Colleges and Universities which took placed in Japan. Believe it or not, Wiley is named our most spiritual school during our 'May is HBCU Campaign HBCU Pride Month'. Congratulations! For more information about Wiley College, visit their website at www.wileyc.edu. |
5. | Langston University Langston, Oklahoma | ![]() | There is not no Lions pride no other than Langston University. Another one of our only HBCU in the state institution, we have to named Langston one of our favorites. Being named after a civil rights pioneer, Join Mercer Langston (1829-1897), Langston is home of the navy blue and orange and was also part of the second season of the reality TV Show College Hill that was shown on BET. Langston was named our 'HBCU of the Month' in November 2013 and we would love to celebrate their campus again in the near future! For more information about Langston, visit their website at www.langston.edu. |
6. | Kentucky State University Frankfort, Kentucky | ![]() | Here is another choice pick from our Founder, he states it something about that Green and Gold he loves and he can not wait to honor them as our 'HBCU of the Month' in October this year. KYSU is the only historically black institution in the state of Kentucky and home of Alumnus Whitney Young. In 2012, our founder announced that he might be leaving the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff due to some situations and got accepted to Kentucky State but something happened and he returned back to UAPB. Those those Thorobreds has product some great achievements throughout the year, such as their Men's Golf team was crowned SIAC champs of 2014 and in March, Toyota partnership with KYSU. KYSU president, Dr. Mary Evans Sias announced she is stepping down and going into retirement and the Kentucky State University Board of Regents announced that past president, Raymond Burse (who was president from 1982 to 1989). For more information about KYSU, visit their website at www.kysu.edu. |

8. | Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Tallahassee, Florida | ![]() | It's an FAMUly Affair as we have became a part of it by loving their campus and student body. Florida A&M University, whose nickname is FAMU was our 'HBCU of the Month' of May we enjoyed every minute of it. FAMU is know to be the largest historically black college in the United States by enrollment and is the only publicly funded historically black college in the state of Florida. Bethune-Cookman University is one of the universities who set the tone of why HBCUs are so important to the black community. The reason Bethune-Cookman is on of our favorites because their founder is one of our founders. Mary McLeod Bethune who was an educator and an civil rights leader founded Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School back in 1904, which was only $1.50 to start, later became Bethune-Cookman University in 2007. Throughout the year B-CU made some exciting accomplishments such as The Marching Wildcats (The Pride) appearance in the movie 'Drumline' in 2002. We would love to also honor Bethune-Cookman as one of our 'HBCUs of the Month' in the near future. For more information about B-CU, visit their website at www.cookman.edu. |

McLaughlin, a popular morning disc jockey at WJMH FM's 102 JAMZ in Greensboro, caused a firestorm in March when he made anti-gay remarks on Twitter about WSSU student, Aaron McCorkle, an openly gay candidate for Mr. WSSU, the school's equivalent of a homecoming king. McLaughlin, a 2006 WSSU graduate, said he would resign if McCorkle were elected. McCorkle lost the election. McLaughlin, who had been the school's PA announce since his junior year in 2004, apologized after his comment on Twitter. But last month he received a letter from Tonia Walker, the athletics director at WSSU, informing him that he wasn't going to be retained. Kevin Manns, an assistant athletics director at WSSU, said Wednesday in a news release that the school is accepting applicants for public address announcer. "We are looking for the best person and best fit for the job," Manns said. "This is the next chapter in athletics. We have a new football coach, a new basketball coach and a new AD, we are moving on and progressing into a new era." "We'll find some good candidates and find the next good voice to help galvanize our fans to attract a new audience." McLaughlin, 34, said by telephone Wednesday he was disappointed but that he also understood why he was not retained. "I had a situation a few months ago that reflected bad on athletics and I'm sure it weighed heavily on Winston-Salem State, and I'm sure that went into their decision to let me go," said McLaughlin, who also has a successful career as a comic and is a cast member of "Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out," a series that will air on MTV2 next month. McLaughlin said he looked on his 10 years in the press box at Bowman Gray Stadium and at the Gaines Center for basketball games as a special time. "I didn't do it for the money, that's for sure," McLaughlin said. "I know it ended kind of badly, but I'll always have a love for Winston-Salem State and I think everybody who knows me knows that." McLaughlin also said that it's going to be tough for him not being able to announce, and that he love his alma mater and that he wishes them well. Winston-Salem State University has been named D.J's Music Site's HBCU Campaign, 'HBCU of the Month' of July. |

"I've Known Dr. Shabazz for many years," said Grambling State President Frank G. Pogue. "He represented the kind of excellence Grambling is known for, and for the university it means a great deal that he was with us." Pogue met Shabazz when Pogue was a graduate student at Atlanta University, he said his roommate, a math student, "idolized" Shabazz. Connie Walton, GSU's provost and vice president of academic affairs, said it was 2005 when the university hired Shabazz as a consultant to help the faculty restructure the mathematics courses, eventually increasing a standing student pass rate to above 80 percent. She said he challenged faculty and students to aim higher. "Dr. Shabazz always said it is important for African American students to see African American teachers with a Ph.D in mathematics," said Walton. President Pogue recently visited Shabazz in the hospital. Shabazz passed away on Wednesday (June 25). He was 87. After his consulting work at GSU, Shabazz formally joined the Gramblinite family in 2007 as an endowed chair for mathematics. He was the first to hold this position at Grambling State University. His career included time at Clark Atlanta University and Lincoln University, among other higher education institutions. President Bill Clinton awarded Shabazz with a national mentor award in September 2000 for excellence in science, mathematics and engineering mentoring in 2000. He also received the National Association of Mathematicians Distinguished Service Award for his years of mentoring and teaching excellence. Shabazz was born to Lonnie Cross in Bessemer, Alabama, on May 22, 1927 and earned a bachelor's in mathematics and chemistry from Lincoln University in 1949, a master's in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951 and a doctorate of in mathematics from Cornell University in 1955. Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward) in 1999 was elected the youngest alderman at age 31. Now, Hardiman wants to do the same thing at age 23. In March, Hardiman brought 14 classmates to Chicago for a week of volunteering including work at the shelter. Hardiman, who grew up and lives in the Roseland area of Chicago, graduated in May from Morehouse College in Atlanta with a bachelor's degree in political science, and he said he was now ready for a bigger challenge. "I know people may think I am too young and inexperienced and that I won't be able to raise enough money to put fourth a good fight but that's what they said (in 2008) about President Barack Obama," Hardiman told DNAinfo Chicago on Monday (June 16). "If he was able to do it, then so can I." Hardiman, also spoke to residents at the Altgeld Gardens public housing complex, which is part of the 9th ward. "I am going to speak to residents to let them know their opinion matters to me and I want to hear their concerns regardless if they are a registered voter or not," Hardiman said. "Ever since I graduated from high school I have always wanted to enter politics to make a difference in my community." In 2010, after graduating from George Corliss High School as a Gates Millennium Scholar, where Beale is also an alumnus, Hardiman predicted at Mayor Richard M. Daley's annual interfaith breakfast at U.S. Cellular Field that he would run for Mayor after finishing college. "Well, maybe I was aiming too high at the time," Hardiman said. "But I certainly think it is a realistic goal." And as far as Haridman attempting to unseat Beale in the February 2015 election, Beale said, "I applaud any young person who wants to become a public servant." ![]() Hardiman said if he did not win he would pursue a master's degree in public policy and eventually run for elected office again. In 2012, Hardiman founded the nonprofit Enough Chicago as a platform to encourage young people to focus on education and to get politicians to increase the number of city community centers. By August, Hardiman said he would have a website, campaign staff and office in place. And until the election Hardiman said he would be working as a summer literacy coach at LaVizzeo Elementary School in Roseland, where he is an alumnus, and in the fall he would be working at a South Side charter school as dean of students. Hardiman, is a member of Salem Baptist Church of Chicago. Which our Founder of the HBCU Campaign, Demetrius Johnson Jr. is also a member and a usher of Salem Baptist Church and as well as a resident of the 9th ward where he grew up in Pullman area and is an alumnus of Jesse Owens Community Academy, Gompers Fine Arts Academy and Christian Fenger High School Academy. Demetrius, was an intern for Ald. Beale back in the summer of 2010, as apart of Mikva Challege Summer Government and Leadership Institute. Mikva Challenge is an non-profit organization that engage Chicago high school students into government and politics. Our Founder Demetrius, says that he loves the work of his current alderman Anthony Beale, but he would not mind seeing an leader, an HBCU leader like Corey Hardiman take over his ward and his community. He supports and wish Hardiman the best in his future endeavors. And whoever wins the election in 2015, Demetrius wants the public official to get more engaged into ways to stop the violence and to getting more people to puts the guns down. |
