Student Profile:

Brittney Jones - Sophomore - Nursing Major

FF8A8A57-9473-43F7-B1FA-2C2C533956DB.png_zpsvn1ill2m.jpegBrittney Jones was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and spent most of her life there. She is a music and book junkie. Beside cooking she loves to volunteer.

Brittney have experienced a lot at Langston. Competing in pageants was a first for her. She competed in Miss Orange and Blue when she first came to Langston. She also competed in the Miss Beta Epsilon Pageant and won. She had the chance to become an Ambassador, one of the best choices that she have ever made. Everything she have done at Langston has helped her grow as a person.

In all honesty Langston University wasn't Brittney choice of schools simply because it was so close to home. After high school she took a year off before going to school. During that break, she looked at more schools and some teachers at her old high school told her to look at Langston University. She apparently did and started to imagine herself there. She's glad she applied at Langston and was accepted, because her high school GPA wasn't good and that Langston University gave her a chance.

Brittney love Langston because of the opportunity they gave her to attend college. She also love Langston because of the people there, they are not afraid to push her to expand her comfort zone. She know that people care about her doing good and if she needs help.

After she receives her undergraduate degree she plans on obtaining Doctoral of Physical Therapy degree to work with veterans, handicap children, and student athletes.

If you are an current Langston University student and would like to be showcased in our Student Profile section during the month of January. No New Posts   President Obama Announces His Free Community College Proposal

January 9, 2015

82C699BB-AD20-4D8F-8E00-3ADAB8ED370D_zpswrh14byg.jpgWASHINGTON - President Obama proposed twp years of free community college for American workers friday, part of what the White House says is an effort to make community college as universal as high school is today.

Obama announced his proposal in a video uploaded to Facebook on Thursday and will deliver a speech Friday in Tennessee.

"Put simply, what I'd like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who's willing to work for it.", he said aboard Air Force One amid a three-state tour to preview the State if the Union Address. "It's something we can accomplish, and it's something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anyone in the world."

The details on the cost and funding would come in the State of the Union Address on Jan. 20 and the president's budget request Feb. 2 sourced from the White House. But the White House expects 9 million students to participate and save up to $3,800 a years for two years. That would place the cost at nearly $70 billion, though there are questions about building capacity at the nation's 1,100 community colleges.

The federal government would pay three quarters of the cost, at least initially.

In some ways, the community college plan is a bookend to Obama's 2013 proposal to pay for universal Pre-Kindergarten through a state and federal partnership. That $75 billion proposal, which relied on dwindling tobacco tax money to provide federal matching funds, never got traction in Congress.

Obama, joined by Vice President Biden, will announce the plan at Pellissippi Community College in Knoxville, Tenn. Obama's plan is modeled after the Tennessee Promise -- a state-level free-college plan starting this fall, paid for with Tennessee Lottery proceeds.

Obama said a world-class education starts with children, but that adults need training, too. "It's not just for kids, we also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits."

No New Posts   Alcorn State University to Eliminate Out-of-State Tuition

January 1, 2015

 th?id=HN.607989527816438763&pid=15.1&P=0xlg-OutOfState_Fees_zpsf67a0a04.jpg

LORMAN, MS - Alcorn State University is now to eliminate out-of-state tuition, with this idea this can help enrollment as well as the retention rate dealing with expenses to continue college, especially at an Historically Black College and University.

Alcorn State Univerfsity's new tuition plan is geared toward attracting more out-of-state students to its campus in Lorman, Mississippi.

The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning approved Alcorn's proposal to eliminate out-of-state tuition for its non-resident students. Alcorn is plan to offer a single flat tuition rate for all residents and non-resident students. The University will charge single flat rate tuition for all students regardless of residency.

"This is on key component of Alcorn's comprehensive enrollment management plan, which is centered around affordability and retention," said President Alfred Rankins Jr.

Non-resident students have historically represented less than 15 percent of the student population and Alcorn has the capacity to accommodate more out-of-state students. The flat tuition rate will become effective during the Fall 2015 semester. Currently enrolled out-of-state students will qualify for the reduced tuition rate starting in the Fall 2015.

Vice President for Student Affairs Emanuel Barnes says the flat tuition assist the University's recruiting strategies.

"Our recruiters are eagerly working with alumni chapters across the nation to attract area students who could not afford the out-of-state tuition rate," said Barnes. "With the new tuition rate for non-resident students, Alcorn is now a more competitive option."

Alcorn's current full-time in state tuition ranges from $6,656 to $7,421, which is a bargain compared to tuition at many institutions across the South.

The new rate will put parents and students who are seeking quality high education experiences at affordable prices more at ease.

"For those students looking for a rigorous, affordable post secondary education away from home while feeling at home than Alcorn is a great choice," Vice President for Finance and Administration Carolyn Dupre said.

Alcorn State University was named D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign's Favorited HBCU of the Year.

No New Posts   Kentucky State University's Interim President Raymond Burse Moves To President Again

October 28, 2014

539E055B-BC0A-449A-9250-355431C405D0_zpsv5wraatu.jpgFRANKFORT -  Raymond M. Burse, who was appointed as Interim President of Kentucky State University was named by the board of regents Friday as president of the historically black college. Burse resigned as president of the institution 25 years ago.

Burse, 63, had been interim president since July 1, when he succeeded Mary Evans Sias, who retired in June. At the time, his contract has to run through June 30, 2015, or until a permanent president was selected.

Burse said he accepted the permanent position again because the institution "is too vital to this state" for him to walk away.

"There are lots of students across this state who need to attend an institution like Kentucky State," he said. "Now all those students don't all look like me. So we've got a mission to serve the citizens of this state, and that's what we're going to be about."

The board unanimously extended his contract three years to June 30, 2018.

"The job to be done is not a 12-month job," Burse said immediately after the board's unanimous vote. "It requires a longer period of service, and I have committed to the board to do that longer period of service because I think  this institution is worth it."

A native of Hopkinsville, Burse was president of KSU from1982 to 1989. He was known then for a hard-nosed management style that sometimes resulted in tense relations with employees, but he raised academic standards, improved finances and oversaw $60 million in capital improvements.

He resigned in 1989 after problems with the faculty, which saw annual turnover rates as high as 20 percent during his tenure.

When he returned to KSU to year, Burse made national headlines after giving $90,000 of his then-nearly $350,000 annual salary to increase the pay of the university's lowest-paid workers.

Burse received a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from Centre College in 1973. While at Centre, he earned a Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University, where he majored in organic chemistry. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1978.

After his first time as president of KSU, Burse became an executive at General Electric Co., retiring in 2012 after 17 years. He initially was GE's senior counsel and then became a vice president and general counsel. Before joining GE, he was a partner in the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs in Louisville.

No New Posts   St. Augustine's University Honors Student Killed in Car Crash

September 29, 2014

1rULMr_zpse3f5d90b.jpgRALEIGH, NC - St. Augustine's University honor student Matthew Mangram travel to his hometown in southeast Georgia to visit his ailing grandmother this past Sunday.

Mangram, who is junior criminal justice major and starting offensive lineman on the school's football team, was about five minutes from home in Darien, Ga., when his crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a Ford Explorer just before 7:45 a.m. Monday.

Mangram was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Robert Balkcom, a trooper with the Georgia State Highway Patrol.

Balkcom states Mangram's Nissan was traveling when he pulled into the northbound lanes to pass another vehicle in front of him.

Two people in the other vehicle, Becky Davis and her daughter Lauren, was seriously injured. They were taken to Southern Georgia Health System in nearby Brunswick and then transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Balkcom said.

St. Augustine's athletics director George Williams described Mangram as a young man who excelled both on and off the football field.

"It is always hard and difficult to lose a family member," Williams said in a statement. "But to lose a young man in the prime of his life like Matthew, who was an honor student and stater on the football team, is almost unspeakable."

St. Aug's held a memorial service for Mangram on Monday afternoon in the campus chapel.

The HBCU Campaign would like to extend our heart and condolences to the family and friends of Matthew Mangram of St. Augustine's University during this difficult time.
