The Campaign heard about the lost across it's Instagram timeline Tuesday. The person is identify as Lydell Hartford Jr., who is a linebacker of the University's Football team. According to source; Hartford died after being accidentally shot. The UAPB issued a statement on the killing Tuesday Night: Lydell Hartford Jr., freshmen linebacker for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team yesterday in a fatal accident in Waggaman, Louisiana. Coaches and administrators at UAPB are saddened by the details of the accident released by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office (JPSO). According to authorities, a 16-year-old boy identified as Hartford's friend was playing with a gun and accidentally shot and killed him early Tuesday morning. Hartford, 20, was pronounced dead after suffering a gunshot wound to the neck, according to Glen T. Boyd, spokesman for the JPSO. Hartford and the teen were in his mother's 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, parked in the driveway of Hartford's home, Boyd said. The teen discovered a .38-caiber pistol that also belonged to Hartford's mother inside the car and began to remove the bullets. Hartford warned him to stop, but the teen ignored Hartford and kept unloading bullets until he thought the gun was empty. The boy squeezed the trigger three or four times until the pistol fired a bullet that hit Hartford in the neck. The teen pulled him out the vehicle and laid him on the driveway. Hartford died about an hour later, Boyd said. The 16-year-old boy was arrested and booked with negligent homicide. The Sheriff's Office is not identifying the teen because he is a juvenile. "It is a shock to us all," said UAPB Chancellor Dr. Laurence Alexander. "We are saddened by the news of his death and offer our condolences, thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time." "Our hearts and prayers really go out to Hartford and his family," said Head Football Coach Monte Coleman. "He was proud to be a part of the team-I am sad to see another young person leave this earth too soon. He will be missed. UAPB Offensive Coordinator Eric Dooley, also a New Orleans native, knew the school Hartford came from and is well acquainted with his family. He didn't work directly with him at practices and games, but noticed he did everything you asked him to. UAPB Defensive Coordinator Earl Buckingham worked directly with Hartford and will remember him for his dedication to the team. "He was a good kid and loved being on the team," said Buckingham. "Our team is hurting and offers our condolences to his family and all those that knew him." D.J's Music Site Senior Editor and CEO/Founder DJ Jr. will be attending UAPB in the fall for his 4th year there and release his statement this morning after learning about the news. "I will like to offer and send our condolences as well as our thoughts, prayers and love to the Hartford family, his friends and specially to Head Coach Monte Coleman and 2012 SWAC UAPB Champion football team on the behalf of D.J's Music Site's HBCU Campaign Staff. Keep your head up and stay strong during this difficult time." |

Jantel was deemed as an implausible source due to her 'lack of education.' The 19-year-old was berated by many due to her speech, appearance and mannerisms. But fortunately her testimony and recent appearance on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight," influenced Tom Joyner to lend a helping hand. ![]() The radio personality and founder of the Tom Joyner Foundation reached out to Jeantel and offered her a full scholarship to any HBCU of her choice. In addition to assisting the young teen with college, he also wants to help her complete high school with the best tutors and SAT courses. Jeantel hopes to pursue a career in law enforcement.

"We are all here to bear witness and celebrate an event that will go down in the annals of University history," said Dr. Benjamin, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at UAPB. Mr. Elbert Bennett, administrative coordinator for Student Affairs noted during his greetings that this was the first change in leadership he'd witnessed in his 35 year tenure at UAPB, "this is an opportunity to celebrate history." A resolution was given by Associate Biology Professor Dr. Sederick Rice on behalf of UAPB Senate to honor Dr. Johnson's service to the institution. Dr. Donald Bobbitt, president of the University of Arkansas System was present and paid homage to the contributions of longtime Chancellor Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. and the diligence of Dr. Johnson's service as interim. "We all appreciate the service of Dr. Davis as Chancellor," said Bobbitt. "I also know that we are thankful for Dr. and Mrs. Alexander's presence today and look forward to the future with excitement and promise." He noted his concern about UAPB upon Dr. Davis' decision to retire, however, his anxiety was eased when Dr. Johnson stepped in to lead the university. "During the entire I inferred him over these last months, I never referred to him as interim because he cares deeply for this institution like he was and has been Chancellor," said Bobbitt. "I feel very fortunate that we were able to attract a candidate with his caliber, drive, initiative and accomplishment," said Bobbitt. "I think his presence speaks volumes to the quality of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and the promise that resides at this institution." ![]() After his remarks, Dr. Bobbitt passed a ceremonial baton to Dr. Alexander signifying a 'change of the guard' in leadership of UAPB. Dr. Calvin Johnson was received with a standing ovation as he prepared to make his comments. He reflected on the SWAC Football Championship in 2012, improvements in customer service and recent NCATE accreditation and emphasized his gratitude for the opportunity. "I am grateful to those who have been very supportive during my time here," said Dr. Johnson. "It was a humbling learning experience." Dr. Alexander approached the podium as the room quieted from applause awaiting the first words of the new chancellor, "Good Morning!" he exclaimed. "Good morning UAPB!"He related to the crowd that he feels blessed by the opportunity and emphasized how grateful, humble and delighted and honored he and his wife Veronica are to join the pride at UAPB. "We understand that this is a grand opportunity for us," said Chancellor Alexander. "We also honor Dr. Johnson for his dedication to this institution. It is not easy to give up one's retirement and take on the responsibility of running an institution. I commend him and his wife for their outstanding service to the university." He also had appreciation for the foundation laid by Johnson, Davis and leaders before them over the span of the institution's 140 year history and pledged to build on their successes. "The true greatness of any institution can be measured in the quality of the work product of its inhabitants, its faculty, students, alumni, stakeholders and friends of this institution." said Alexander. He also stated that his goals starting out will be achieving the gold standard in overall academics, teaching, research, service along with growth in size and stature of the student population. He noted that growth will not be measured by size alone but by the success of the students through graduation and beyond. Advancement for UAPB will also be sought in the development of new resources and the fostering of a spirit and culture of excellence in everything that is done. "We begin that work today," said Alexander. |

![]() It's the saddest news in HBCU history. D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign has learn that an HBCU has to close their doors after 125-years of operating. St. Paul College in Virgina will closing on June 30.After having unsuccessfully battled with crushing debt and a rejected accreditation, St. Paul is joining the list of HBCU's forced to closed their doors for good. The major agents behind the 125-year old school's closure have reignited discussion on the current state of HBCUs and possible ways to ensure their future.![]() St. Paul's College is a private, historically black college located in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Saint Paul's College opened its doors on September 24, 1888. Saint Paul's college offered undergraduate degrees for traditional college students and distant learning students in the Continuing Studies Program. The school also offered adult eduction to help assist working adults to gain undergraduate degrees. Saint Paul's College had a Single Parent Support System Program that assist single teen parents to gain a college education. in 1941 the name of the institution was changed to Saint Paul's Polytechnic Institute when the state granted the school authority to offer a four-year program. The first bachelor's degree was awarded in 1944. In 1957 the college adopted its present name to reflect its liberal arts and teacher eduction curricula. In June 2012, the college's regional accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and School commission on Colleges, stripped the college of its accreditation. Although the college has been on probation, it lost its accreditation for "violations concerning financial resources, institutional effectiveness in support services, institutional effectiveness in academics and student services, lack of terminal degrees for too many faculty members, and a lack of financial stability." The college sued the accreditor and two months later a court issued a preliminary injunction reinstating the college's probationary accreditation to protect it during further legal proceedings. Although there were initial plans that St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina another historically black university of Episcopal heritage (The college I got accepted to before I decided to takes UAPB offer), would acquire St. Paul's but the deal was abandoned in May 2013. Shorty thereafter, the college reported to SACS that it woudl close on June 30, 2013. Saint Paul's eleven-building campus is situated on 185 acres of green hills. Older buildings were constructed by students and donated by friends of the College. The college has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the news; approximately 200 students were enrolled at the school; 51 students graduated from in the spring. See an list of other HBCUs that have closed their doors below. |

In an article theses were some statements found from former presidents of HBCUs and the president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. "When you don't have a large endowment, you're dependent on tuition," said George Cooper, former president of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. "The trend in enrollment for a number HBCUs is on the decline, because families just dont have enough resources to send their sons and daughters to school." Black families are reeling from the Great Recession that stripped half of their wealth and an unemployment rate that nearly double the jobless rate for Whites. "The economic crisis that we see today impacts all universities," said Cooper. "If you don't get the students, you really don't maintain the enrollment base necessary to pay the cost associated with running a university." Recent changes to the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students programs made it even harder for parents with weak credit histories to qualify for the loan. Students who attend historically Black colleges and universities rely on the loans at a higher rate than other groups. Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, said those changes coupled with anemic alumni support likely crippled St. Paul's, but that a number of factors likely contributed to its demise. "It's a very sad day when any historic institution has to close its doors when we know that there is significant need for higher education in the African American community," said Taylor. "Unfortunately, in our community the only thing that we're strongly socialized to give to is the church," said Taylor. "Thats the biggest part of the problem." Taylor fears that it will take more closings of more HBCUs before the Black community wakes up and reacts to the crisis. "It's not going to happen until our community starts seeing a trend of HBCUs closing and no one is running to save them," said Taylor. "Ultimately, the school and its alums have the responsibility to make sure that their [alma mater] continues to grant degrees." The article also states that Morris Brown College in Atlanta founded in 1881 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), was saddled with $30 million in debt, filed for bankruptcy to avoid closing. It lost it accreditation in 2002 and recently rejected $10 million proposal from the mayor to purchase the campus. All HBCUs listed above that closed in the past will be entered into our HBCU dictionary as Special Honoree HBCUs. Let's make a different by letting D.J's Music Site help your community and help education especially HBCUs and help current the legacy of all HBCUs in the near future by becoming a volunteer, helping, researcher and donor of to the D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign, you can get more information on the D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign here. Shreveport -- After hearing about the disturbing news about the mass shooting and killings at an Elementary school in Newtown, Our senior editor, D.J. Jr. (@CuzICan_DJ) attends the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) which is an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) and as apart of our D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign which is to honor all HBCU's around the United States felt our sorrow to report this. But our senior editor heard the news last Thursday about UAPB's Alumni, Andrew Perkins who was then reported on life support from being involve in a serious car accident. Andrew Perkins, 25, was riding back to Grambling State with his friend Michael Hubbard Jr., (25), to support him in his graduation from Grambling State University on Friday. When they were driving on I-20 they crossed the median and struck a 2000 Kenworth Conventional 18-wheeler traveling west on I-20 that was driven by 41-year-old David Alday of Juarez, Mexico. Hubbard, who was to graduate last Friday with a degree in nursing from GSU, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln Parish Coroner's Office.
Friday Michael Hubbard, Jr. parents walked across the GSU stage during the Friday's commencement ceremony to recieve the diploma intended for their son. GSU President Frank Pogue said he was deeply troubled to hear the news early Friday morning, when he had just taken a photo with Hubbard the previous night during a university event, titled Tiger Torch Night, celebrating the students who were about to graduate. "I'm not sure anything is more hurtful than to have taken a picture with Michael Hubbard last night when he attended (the event) and then to learn this morning that he had been killed in a car accident," Pogue said. "You could see all the excitement in his face and the face of his parents that he would be graduating (Friday) with his colleagues. Not to have him there (at graduation) was certainly a tremendous shock to the entire Grambling community." There was an blood drive to honor the lives of the two young man. Donations to the family is unknown and will be find out soon if you would like to donate to the family to show your sympathy. Funeral services for Michael Hubbard, Jr. and Andrew Perkins who have been best friends their entire lives will be today and together. The SWAC is the the Southwest Athletic Conference for some historically black colleges & universities and is the conference that UAPB is conference in. The Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions battled the Jackson State University Tigers in front of 32,000 fans. The Golden Lions took the win of 24-21 in overtime which made SWAC Championship history. Jackson State got on the scoreboard first at the 9:16 minute mark when Clayton Moore found Rico Richardson on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Jackson State push their lead to 14-0 when Rakeem Sims scored on a 37-yard jaunt at the 4:18 minute mark of the first quarter. The Golden Lions reply back at the 14:57 mark of the second quarter when Ben Anderson scored on quarterback keeper to make the score 14-7. But the Tigers wasn't taking that answer serious. The Tigers came back to score once again on a one yard run by Clayton Moore to make the score 21-7. With four seconds left in the first half outside linebacker Xavier Lofton sacked JSU quarterback Clayton Moore causing a fumble, at which point Lofton's counter part senior middle linebacker Bill Ross scooped up the fumble rumbled 73-yards for a touchdown making the score at halftime 21-14. That score hold up until two minutes left in the ball game, when Anderson would find Willie Young breaking across the middle of the field on a post route a 95-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21. Time expire with the score knotted at 21 a piece. The Golden Lions and Tigers would need overtime to settle this battle for the SWAC crown. When it came to overtime, Jackson State would have first possession in the overtime period after being stopped on three straight plays. The Tigers opted to attempted a field goal to take the lead but the kick was blocked by senior defense lineman Sean Robinson giving ball back to the Golden Lions with an opportunity to make history. With their shot at the end zone and potentially the first SWAC Championship looming in the balance, Justin Billings was the ensuing hand-off around the left end for what was thought to be the game winning touchdown. But after an official's review, Billings was ruled out at the five yard line. Two plays later, place kicker Tyler Strickland would get a chance at redemption. Earlier in the ball game Strickland missed a 25-yard attempt but proved to be the hero of the ballgame by down the game winning 26-yard field goal to cement this historic season for Head Coach Monte Colemon and his Golden Lions Football team. The 2012 Golden Lions went down in history Saturday by being the first team in their school history to have an 10 game winning season and the first team in school history to win the SWAC Championship for football. "This is what you practice for, all the long hours, all of the hard work, when you're able to reach this level of success it's a blessing. UAPB is now on the map." UAPB is the first HBCU to be selected into the D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign and was honored as September's 2012 HBCU of the Month. You can view honoree bio here. As UAPB's new interim Chancellor, Dr. Calvin Johnson looks to work hard within the 12 months or more during the search for a new Chancellor to take on what Dr. Lawrence A. Davis lead for 20 years, which is now in place. The University is ready to do what it takes to increase enrollment and equip graduates for the work force. UAPB found out this past Thursday, that the prosecutor won't be filling any criminal charges in the UAPB audit investigation which took place starting back in January and four employee fired including the former Chancellor's Sectary who was administrator over the Harrold Complex Dorm. Johnson said it was a chance for UAPB to move on. "The decision rendered by the prosecuting attorney today was brought this process to a point of closure and has opened the gates so that we can go ahead and get some things done that we need to do" Johnson told a reporter according to the PB Commercial.
Broughton states: "I want to move Pine Bluff forward through positive thinking and actions that will create a promising and economically sound future for everyone, particularly our young people," and adding that he believes he possesses "the necessary leadership abilities."
While former SGA members are moving forward, the current and newly elected officers are also moving forward in the SGA. As the new 2012-2013 cabinet, While the conversely about our CEO & Senior Editor DJ (Demetrius Johnson Jr.) decision about leaving the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, well he has recently released his decision to return back to the University. He will make his return back on August 20th. He had offers from East-West University (Chicago) and Kentucky State University (Frankfort). He will return to his third year attending at the University and he say's he is also moving forward along with everyone else and hoping for the best. "I will return to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. I'm not announcing my departure but I'm restating my re-entry and to say I am the one paying tuition for my education at this institution and not the students nor the administrators and staff. They are actually making their salary from my tuition. When I get back, there will be a lot of changes to be made academically and student life wise. I just hope for the best and hopefully I still have a spot on the cabinet of the SGA like when I left in May because I really love working as a SGA Officer and serving to help better the student body. Because I never announced I was leaving, just stated I wanted to transfer. So let's have a great 2012-2013 year and move on to better and bigger things. Let's make improvement!" Johnson will serve as Interim Chancellor while a national search will be conducted to find a permanent replacement for Dr. Lawrence A. Davis Jr., who will retire Friday, May 25th. Johnson has said he will not be a candidate for the permanent poisition. After consulting with campus and community leaders, Im pleased that Dr. Calvin Johnson has agreed to serve as interim chancellor of UAPB, Bobbitt said. Calvin has vast experience in higher education and is a strong leader in the Pine Bluff community. I believe he has the right combination of experience and knowledge of the university to serve in this capacity, and I look forward to working with him. Johnson is Former Dean of the College of Education at UAPB and Former Chair of the Department of Teacher Education at UAPB and Former Chair of the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His career in education as a teacher and faculty member spans more than 30 years. He served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1998 to 2004 and is a current member of the Arkansas Higer Education Coordinating Board, a position he will resign before becoming interim Chancellor. As a graduate of UAPB and having served on the faculty for almost 20 years, I have a firm understanding of the important role the university plays in our community and state, Johnson said. Im excited about the opportunity to serve in this capacity and help bridge the transition to a new chancellor. Bobbit has met with the UAPB Faculty and Staff Senate, Campus Administrators and State and Local leaders about the search for a new Chancellor. He plans to convene a advisory committee to assist in the process with the goal of having a permanent Chancellor in place by July 1, 2013. |
