On Monday, March 16, 2015 the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) officially releases an statement on the 2015 MEAC/SWAC Challenge which is presented By Disney and to be played Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Orlando Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. and will showcase the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff of the SWAC who will go against South Carolina State University of the MEAC. The 11th annual event featuring the two HBCUs will be aired on an ESPN network.

"We are thrilled to have South Carolina State University and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in our 2015 game," said Pete Derzis, senior vice president, ESPN Events. "We are equally excited to be returning to the newly renovated Orlando Citrus Bowl for the 11th installment of our event, and engaging with the community again. As we start our second decade, our mission remains strong, which is to continue to build on HBCU traditions, while providing a stellar experience for the student-athletes and conference partners."

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge is owned and operated by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN. ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jay Harris has played a significant role in the event, serving as emcee at various ancillary functions.

UAPB will be making their first appearance in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. The Golden Lions has been led by head coach Monte Coleman since November 2007. This past season, UAPB went 4-7 overall, 3-6 in the SWAC.

"We are excited to be stepping into the next decade of this event," said Duer Sharp, commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. "The tradition and history of the Challenge speaks for itself and UAPB and South Carolina State join a long line of programs to benefit from the experience. It is a great way to kick off the season."

South Carolina State will be playing in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge for the third time, winning their two previous appearances (2005, 2009). The Bulldogs are led by head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough, who just completed his 13th season at the helm of his alma mater. SCSU went 8-4 overall in 2014, and recorded a 6-2 mark in the MEAC.

"We are excited to have South Carolina State University represent the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the 11th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney," said MEAC commissioner Dennis Thomas. "The MEAC/SWAC Challenge has been an instrumental event for our conference in continuing to expand our brand on a national platform, playing on ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Sports, and providing our teams with an opportunity to participate in a bowl-like, first-class event, which kicks off the football season. I look forward to a competitive game as the two teams from both conferences display their talents and sportsmanship on the national stage."

CHESTER COUNTY, Pa.- Lincoln University, a historically black college & university outside Philadelphia is investigating after someone racially spray-painted Lincoln N*gger University" which was discovered on a sign at an entrance on the campus, according to source.

Lincoln University says campus public safety officers discovered the vandalism at 1:50 a.m. Thursday and immediately took steps to correct the damage and it has been removed.

Acting president Valerie Harrison called the graffiti a display of ignorance and hatred and said in a letter to students that it's a sober reminder of hatred and intimidation past generations overcame.

Harrison says the university will put measures in place to minimize opportunities for defacing property on it campus about 45 miles west of Philadelphia.

She told Lincoln's 2,500 students they shouldn't be distracted by "the cowardly acts of others" or act out in a manner inconsistent with the state-related university's values.

Lincoln University was founded in 1854 to provide educational opportunities for African-Americans. It was the first degree-granting historically black college and university in the United States.

No New Posts   FAMU Alumna Mitzi Miller steps down as Editor-in-Chief of Ebony Magazine

February 20, 2015

Mitzi Miller pictured Timothy Lyons of Claflin UniversityCHICAGO, IL - After an four-year tenure, FAMU Alumna Mitzi Miller is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Ebony magazine.

The Chicago-based Johnson Publishing named Miller as editor-in-chief of Ebony magazine in April, replacing Amy DuBois Barnett, who left to launch a new website for ESPN about African-American sports and culture.

Miller, 39, had been editor of sister publication Jet magazine since 2011. She plans to go on to pursue writing for television and film, according to a statement released by Miller.

"I've always subscribed to the principle of living in the present and remaining open to all of life's opportunities," Miller said in a statement. "So I believe that now is an exciting time to start a new chapter in my life."

The announcement comes after release of the successful "With This Ring," movie which aired last month on Lifetime Network. Miller co-wrote the 2006 book, "The Vow," which the movie was based.

Miller oversaw major change during her tenure at Johnson Publishing. At Jet magazine, she is credited with remaking the iconic digest-sized publication, adding more service-oriented stories, bigger photos, more graphics and a redesigned website. In May, one month after moving over to fill the void at Ebony, Johnson Publishing announced plan to replace the print version of Jet with a new digital app. The app launched in July, but was shelved in October amid billing and other issues.

Before joining Jet, Miller served as editor-in-chief of Set magazine. Previously, she was an associate editor at Jane magazine, and she started her career at Honey magazine in 2001. A Connecticut native, who graduated with an Bachelor's degree from Florida A&M University.

A successor as editor is yet to be named by Johnson Publishing.

The D.J's Music Site HBCU Campaign team recently received the opportunity to hear Miller give the keynote speech at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff's Black History Program in early February. Our founder also received the opportunity to meet Miller. We were thrilled and inspired from hearing her speech. We would like to wish Miller the best of success in her future endeavors.

I Am... Tom Joyner, born on November 23, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama, the son of Frances and Hercules L. Joyner. I came from an educated family, my grandfather was one of 3,000 black physicians in the United States, earning a degree in medicine in 1909. Both of my parents were graduates of HBCUs, me and my brother Albert attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University).

While at Tuskegee, I joined the fraternity Omega Psi Phi and was involved with the college radio station. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1978. After graduation, I began my broadcasting career in Montgomery, Alabama, and worked at a number of radio stations in Memphis and St. Louis, before moving to Chicago in 1978. In Chicago, I first worked at WVON, doing the morning show, but left the station after only three months to work at WBMX-FM.

By July 1978, I was hired by Charles Mootry, general manager of station WJPC (AM) (now WNTD). This station, named for "Johnson Publishing Company," was named by John H. Johnson, owner of black magazines, Jet and Ebony. In 1985, I was simultaneously offered two positions: one for a morning show at KKDA-FM (K104) in Dallas and one for an afternoon show at WGCI-FM in Chicago. Instead of choosing one, I end up taking both jobs, and for eight years, I commuted daily by plane between cities, earning the nickname "The Fly Jock". In 1994, I was signed by ABC Radio Networks to host a nationally syndicated program, The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

I also founded The Tom Joyner Foundation, which has provided financial assistance to students at HBCUs. Since 1998, it has raised more than $60 million to help keep students enrolled in HBCUs. In 1998, I was the first African American to be inducted into The National Radio Hall of Fame.

No New Posts   UAPB students to study abroad at Chinese Universities as part of HBCU-China Scholarship Network

February 16, 2015

img_6903_zps555734df.jpg

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - This summer semester of the 2015-2016 academic year, students from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) will be able to study abroad in China as part of an agreement between the Chinese government and a list of other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

As a member of the HBCU-China Scholarship Network, UAPB will provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students for enrollment at any one of 25 universities participating in the program. Scholarships will cover periods ranging from four weeks to two years.

"To our knowledge, this is the first time a major foreign government has extended scholarship opportunities to students at HBCU institutions," Dr. Pamela Moore, associate director of the office of International Programs at UAPB, said.

According to UAPB, the full scholarships will include tuition and room and board, while the students are responsible for international airfare, visa fees, travel insurance and spending money while in China.

A pilot group of thirteen UAPB students (pictured above) is tentatively scheduled to study in China for the Summer 2015 semester. To be eligible for the scholarships, students must complete a humanities course entitled "Introduction to Chinese Culture."

A three-week online orientation administered by the HBCU-China Scholarship Network designed to teach students about the basics of living and studying abroad in China will be incorporated into the new course. And the student was recruited by a committee of professors and chair person of different departments.

The Introduction to Chinese Culture course, which is sponsored by the English department and will be offered yearly at UAPB.

"We anticipate developing a foreign language program in Mandarin Chinese so that students can continue to strengthen their language skills after they return from their first experience abroad in China," Dr. Lorenz (Chair of the Department of English, Theatre and Mass Communication) said. "As China is an emerging global economic power, mastering Mandarin Chinese can open doors to global opportunity for our students."

"This is an awesome opportunity for our students," Dr. Laurence B. Alexander (UAPB Chancellor), said. "The scholarship will enable our students to be prepared for a global society."

February 16, 2015

7A82506E-046F-454B-A4AD-363DDE7387A4_zpseggkkvsp.jpg

I Am... James E. Shepard, who was a pharmacist, civil servant, educator and founder of what became North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. I was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on November 3, 1875. I attended and received my undergraduate and professional training at Shaw University.

I worked as a pharmacist in the community; and later as a civil servant and religious educator. I first established it as a private school for religious training in 1910 but later adapted it as a school for teachers. I than renamed it to National Training School; it was supported by the philanthropy of my numerous black and white friends in both the North and the South. I also had a network of private supporters, including northern white philanthropists such as Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage of New York.

The school provided professional development for black teachers of the Jim Crow era. I served as the school's first president for nearly 40 years. In 1923, North Carolina legislature approved state funding and the institution's name was changed to Durham State Normal School. In 1925, the program was expanded to a four-year curriculum, and the institution became North Carolina College for Negroes, the first state-supported liberal arts college in North Carolina and in the United States.

Its first four-year college class graduated in 1929. In  1947, the named became North Carolina College at Durham. The 1969 General Assembly established the institution as one of the State's regional universities, and the name was changed to North Carolina Central University. Since 1927, NCCU has been constituent institution of the University of North Carolina. On October 6, 1947, I died and I was succeeded in 1948 by Alfonso Elder.

No New Posts   South Carolina House SubCommitte Votes To Close S.C. State University For Two Years

February 10, 2015

77_zps77478a40.jpgORANGEBURG, SC. - According to Legislatures, S.C. State University would not hold classes or athletics events for the next two years under a plan approved by an S.C. House budget panel Tuesday.

The plan is to give the financially troubled school a "clean slate," calls for closing of S.C. State in July and firing its trustees, administrators, faculty and staff.

The school would reopen under new leadership in Fall of 2017. The 3,000 students at the state's only historically black public college could get state scholarships to attend other S.C. public colleges or any historically black university.

The Orangeburg school has a $10 million deficit owed to food and maintenance vendors. Its enrollment also has dropped by more than a third since 2007 and just 14 percent of its students graduate within four years.

The proposal approved Tuesday is along shot to pass the Legislature.

Suspending operations at S.C. State would require the proposal pass the full House and the state Senate, where the college has powerful advocates, including Senate President Pro Tempore Hugh Leatherman.

"We are looking at a bankrupt institution," said state Rep. Jim Merrill, the Berkeley Republican who heads the panel that recommended suspending operations at S.C. State. "No one takes any pleasure in recommending this."

The Florence Republican is the architect of an ongoing recovery plan for financially troubled S.C. State. The plan included forming a panel of current and former S.C. College presidents to advise the school. That panel recommended a $12 million bailout of the school, approved late last year. S.C. State also received a $6 million loan from state budget leaders last year.

The House panel's proposal does not address how the state would cover the costs of closing S.C. State temporarily, including paying off an estimated $100 million in bonded debt that the school owes.

There is a question about if some S.C. State students might be left without a new school if the Orangeburg school suspended its operations. Even with state scholarships, some students might not qualify academically for admission to other schools.

Even if the proposal to suspend operations fails in the Legislature, S.C. State is being damaged by it, school president Thomas Elzey said Tuesday.

"It's damaging our ability to attract students and damaging our ability to raise money," Elzey said according to 'The State' news. "It's creating a problem for the university in the message that it sends."

S.C. State's accreditation is on probation because of its financial, accounting and governance issues. If the operations were to be suspended, S.C. State would lose its accreditation by SACS. It would also take two years for S.C. State to restore accreditation after its reopening. It would leave students hard to receive financial aid, due to students cannot receive it at unaccredited schools.

Also if the school is focus to close, it would close for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years. Students would be only be able to scholarships to attend other state public colleges or other historically black schools if they keep a 2.5 gpa.

The state would also fire school administrators, trustees, faculty and state under the proposal. Some employees at the Orangburg school could reapply for their jobs when the school reopened, said state Rep. Phillip Lowe. The school employs about 1,000.

The panel of current and former state college presidents currently advising that S.C. State would develop a plan to reopen the school by Jan. 1, 2017, and state the process of hiring new leadership and faculty.

Budget panel member states S.C. State president Elzey has not done enough to turn around the school's financial fortunes since arriving in mid-2013 from The Citadel. He arrived in Orangeburg as lawmakers were replacing almost the entire S.C. State Board of Trustees

The school tweeted from its official Twitter account the phone numbers of the S.C. House and governor's office, asking supporters to help fight the budget proposal.
